MODERN warfare by drone strike deals death to combatants and civilians by remote control. Is there a moral dimension to this kind of killing?
In this compelling study, a frontline fighter pilot becomes a controller of drone strikes. From the security of a control room near Las Vegas, he rains death upon the Taliban in Afghanistan. It’s as easy as playing a child’s computer game, but the effects are devastatingly real.
Ethan Hawke plays Tom Egan who flew F-16 fighter jets before being sidelined to an office in the Nevada Desert where he takes his orders from the impersonal CIA. He is a haunted man.
At least the other side could shoot back in former times. Civillians are caught up in the attacks and Egan begins to feel like a murderer.
The CIA, constantly ratchets up the action, regardless of human consequences, and Ethan’s sparky co-pilot, Zoe Kravitz, also feels the pressure. January Jones plays Ethan’s anguished wife. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol in 2014. Empire magazine called it: “A complex, satisfying character study turned combat thriller. It is as terrifying as it is timely.”
