A YUPPIE stockbroker is set upon by a bar-room bully until a sinister stranger comes to the rescue coolly wielding a broken bottle. This manipulative tough guy teaches our mild mannered hero how to enjoy himself, win battles at the office and make it with girls and then — the first dead body turns up.
Wimpish Michael Boll is played by James Spader and his benefactor Alex, a creepy analyst, is Rob Lowe. The stockbroker is suddenly having a great time, but has no idea what his mentor is letting him in for.
One critic compared it to the Hitchcock classic Strangers on a Train where two men agree to swap murders of difficult relatives. A difference here is that Michael was never told of the arrangement.
Directed in 1990 by Curtis Hanson who later masterminded the much admired cop thriller LA Confidential.
Critic Roger Ebert said: “The movie sneaks up on you, at first you are not even sure where it’s going. A creepy relationship between a born innocent and a stranger who changes accents and identities every night. A sombre introspective study.”
