AN AMUSING comedy about the havoc created when a Hollywood film crew takes over a small town. The theme isn’t new but writer-director David Mamet and a quality cast work hard to keep you smiling.
In 2000, Alec Baldwin played star Bob Barrenger, who has a weakness for nymphettes. Will the local teenage siren seduce him or will he think of it first? Another problem is that temperamental co-star, sex bomb Claire Wellesley, alias Sarah Jessica Parker, refuses to bear her breasts. Claire has decided to stop playing nude scenes, although Barrenger says her boobs are so well known any moviegoer could draw them from memory.
Writer Philip Seymour Hoffman is furious because his beautiful words are being twisted by the stars to suit the budget and the studio bosses.
Trying to keep the lid on everything is frantic director Walt Price, alias William H Macy, a plausible fixer with only the vaguest notion of objective truth. The hapless local community is led by a conniving mayor Charles Durning.
Critic Leonard Maltin said: “The observations are perceptive, and the performances delicious especially Macy as the director who can talk anybody into anything.”
