Commemorations take place across TRNC on August 1 Resistance Day
COMMEMORATIONS took place across the TRNC on Wednesday, the anniversary of three key dates in Turkish Cypriot history.
August 1 Communal Resistance Day celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Turkish Resistance Organisation (TMT), set up to defend Turkish Cypriots against Greek Cypriot Eoka terror attacks.
The day was also the 42nd anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish Cypriot Security Forces (GKK) and marked 447 years since the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571. Brigadier General Tevfik Algan, TMT Freedom Fighters’ Association head Yılmaz Bora and parliamentary Deputy Speaker Zorlu Töre were among those to attend the day’s main ceremony at the Lefkoşa Atatürk monument at Girne Gate.
