Crowds attend hatchling release as raft race rescheduled for tomorrow
HIGH winds scuppered Sunday’s planned Rafts Against Rubbish race, but the fundraiser organised by Karşıyaka Turtle Watch (KTW) at Güzelyalı Beach has been rescheduled for tomorrow.
KTW head Jenny Tyler said: “The effect of a full moon and a total lunar eclipse with high winds on the sea meant we had to call it off, but we have four entries for tomorrow, judging is at 10am and the race starts at 10.30am.
“A safety boat will be on standby and we have life jackets for everyone courtesy of Cyprus Active.”
The annual competition to make and race a raft made from recycled rubbish promises its usual hilarity and late entries, priced at 50TL, will be accepted from teams of over-18s with a designated captain who is over 21.
Meanwhile the hatchling season is reaching its peak, with three nests having been excavated on Wednesday.
Marine Turtle Conservation Project sponsors Turkcell brought droves of visitors to Alagadi to witness a hatchling release last week and guided excavations are on offer regularly this month at Alagadi, Güzelyalı and the project’s Karpaz base.
Bookings to attend an excavation should be made via the Society for the Protection of Turtles (Spot) website or the Karşıyaka Turtle Watch social media page where excavation times are posted on the day. Alagadi Beach bookings may be made by phone, after midday, to 0533 872 5350.
