THE second round of the 2018 North Cyprus ROK Karting Championship took place at Lefkoşa’s Cemsa Sporting Centre on Sunday after a delay caused by unseasonal rain.

Organised by the North Cyprus Karting Club under direction from the North Cyprus Automobile Club, the event got off to a late start due to heavy showers that led to a rapidly formed crisis desk deciding to omit parts of the track affected by rain and conduct drying-up operations on the remainder.

The season’s second round saw 23 entrants take part in four categories, with trophies and medals going to winners and runners-up.

The Mini category, which had nine entrants, attracted the customary high level of attention and saw victory go to Mustafa Efe Efe, with Hasan Bedel second and Niyazi Özçınar third.

There was hard-fought competition in the Junior category, with Cevdet Alptürk, absent from the season’s first leg, claiming first place, followed by Mert Uzun in second and Demir Emre third.

Meanwhile, İzzet Çınar, who headed the field in the first round of the Senior category, chalked up another victory, followed by Közün Arpalıklı and Janet Öncülay.

Overall winner out of a four-strong line-up in the Shifts category was Umut Araz, with Serkan Bolkaner second and Coşkun Gürel third.

The championship is being staged with the backing of the Prime Ministry’s Anti-Drugs Commission, the Sports Department and Güven Insurance.
