Father raises funds for children with cancer

- By YASEMIN GÜLPINAR

FUNDS were raised for child cancer patients in the TRNC by the father of a young victim of the disease when he ran the 45th BMW Berlin Marathon during September’s National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Online donations for Ceyhun Uzun’s charity, Tanyel’s Smile — created with his wife, Gülay, in memory of their daughter, Tanyel, who passed away in 2016, aged just 20 — continue to boost funds raised by the marathon which have almost reached the target £200.

The UK-based couple are planning to visit the TRNC in October for talks at the Lefkoşa Oncology Centre about equipment and other needs that could be funded through the charity. The following month will see Mr Uzun don his running shoes again for another fundraising effort at the 36th Athens Authentic Marathon.

Meanwhile, free Gold Ribbon badges were being distributed in the TRNC and UK throughout this month to raise awareness of childhood cancer, with an additional 1,000 being produced.

“Tanyel had the gold ribbon tattooed on her back while briefly in remission and she always wanted to increase awareness of childhood cancer, which is what we are trying to do in her name,” said Mrs Uzun.
