CRITICS say your heart is made of stone if you are unmoved by this two-and-a-half-hour operatic epic about suffering and redemption in 19th century France. This polemic on man’s inhumanity to man captures the essence of Victor Hugo’s original novel.

This movie won three Oscars in 2012 and the earlier stage version has been seen worldwide by 60 million people.

Hugh Jackman steals the show as the desperate Jean Valjean who served 19 years in a chain gang for stealing a loaf of bread, before his life was transformed by an act of kindness. Russell Crowe convinces as the obsessive policeman Javert who relentlessly hounds him down the years. Valjean’s beloved daughter, Cosette, is winningly played by Amanda Seyfried.

Director Tom Hooper gives added punch to Claude Schonberg’s memorable music and Herbert Kretsmer’s lyrics by making his actors sing live to camera instead of being pre-recorded or dubbed by someone else.

Anne Hathaway, as the dying Fantine, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Other awards were technical.

Empire magazine called it: “A musical unlike any other. Occasionally, like its characters, ragged around the edges, it provides a new model for the movie musical.”
