Health walk
THE rapidly growing number of diabetic patients in the TRNC has been highlighted by a “health walk” and seminar on the subject.
Organised by Alsancak Municipality and the Diabetes Association, the walk took place at Alsancak National Park last Saturday and was part of the Civic Space community group’s third Open Door Festival.
All those taking part in the awareness-raising event were told of the benefits of an active lifestyle and healthy diet, particularly in combating obesity which is associated with diabetes.
On Monday, meanwhile, people were given the same message at a seminar and on both days blood tests were on offer to identify sugar levels that can provide early signs of the disease.
Speaking of the importance of sport in helping to prevent diabetes, Alsancak Mayor Fırat Ataser said: “We hope other municipalities will also hold such events which help people to change their lifestyle. We were happy to work with the Diabetes Association in a joint initiative for the first time and are ready to help them in their future work.”
Association head Caner Arca said: “These events are a great step forward in getting over the message about the importance of an active life and healthy eating to prevent diabetes, which is rapidly increasing in the TRNC and around the world.
“Although overweight people can have surgery . . . they should first try to lose weight, eat carefully and do some exercise.”
