THE fascinating true story of a big business executive who blew the whistle on a price-fixing scam that had cost consumers billions of dollars. His story is not as straightforward as you might imagine.

Director Steven Soderbergh’s acclaimed biopic in 2009 presents an alarming insight into big business, where executives are principally dedicated to lining their own pockets.

Mark Whitacre was the highest ranking whistleblower in US corporate history and was described by an FBI agent as “an American hero”.

Ironically, Whitacre ended up with a prison sentence three times longer than any of the swindlers he helped put away. The explanation is that, even while he was secretly recording incriminating board meetings for the Feds, Whitacre, persuasively played by Matt Damon, was embezzling $9 million of company cash. It takes all sorts.

Today, Whitacre is an executive with a hi-tech company in California. He tries to excuse his chequered history by saying that he sometimes felt like two different persons. Time Out said: “A film less interested in the particulars of nefarious corporate dealings than in creating a credible psychological portrait of a man driven by who knows what.”
