KAR marks World Animal Day

- By YASEMIN GÜLPINAR

KYRENIA Animal Rescue (KAR) marked World Animal Day on Thursday with the first of a series of visitors and a special competition.

The day brought gifts of tinned cat and dog food from a group of 30 Merit Hotels staff, who were given a tour of the charity’s Arapköy rescue kennels, during which they learned about the work that goes into looking after the stray and abandoned animals there.

Some 40 students from Girne American College are also expected this week — among many visits and donations made to the rescue centre each year to mark World Animal Day.

KAR’s Education Team have also prepared and distributed entry papers to 10 local schools for their students take part in a poetry competition about the importance of the occasion.

Meanwhile, the charity has appealed for help in funding six “lucky” dogs now being prepared to go to homes in the US — a new rehoming venture taken up as cheaper and more convenient than the usual route of sending pets to adoptive owners in Europe or the UK.

KAR said it took just 30 days to ready an animal to travel to the US, compared with up to four months for Europe, but the travel process still cost £850 per dog — for which they are seeking contributions.

Anyone wishing to help can visit KAR’s Karakum office or its website, where there are UK bank account details and Paypal and “red button” options for online donations.
