Teen tennis ace wins tournament
TEENAGE Turkish Cypriot tennis star Eliz Maloney Yorgancı has been crowned champion of a five-day tournament, the second she competed in during the Lawn Tennis Associationorganised British Tour.
The 18-year-old TRNC athlete, whose ambition is to play in a Wimbledon grand slam final, became champion after playing seven games without conceding a single set when the Tour was in Loughborough. The victory follows her reaching the semifinals of the Tour in Nottingham last month when she had a string of victories that only ended when she was defeated by top-seeded Anna Chesca 6-2 6-3, as reported by Cyprus Today last week.
Speaking to this paper after her Loughborough triumph, she said: “When I took part in both tournaments, I was aware that I had some things missing in my game due to being unable to practise and train properly because of my A-level exams.
“Becoming champion is nice. What pleased me most was my ability to implement the game-style I had planned and trained for, although
I am aware that I still need to improve”.
Eliz thanked Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman and Sports Department head Alkan Degirmencioğlu for their support, along with her sponsors Arden Gıda Ltd, Atakom Ticaret Ltd, Metgin Ltd and Oreo Trading Ltd, before starting preparations for a tennis tournament in Egypt later this month.
