FOURTEEN entrants competed in the third round of the North Cyprus Hill Climb Championship which ended in overall victory on Sunday for the Deniz Denner and Ömer Topçu duo who also took first place in the E2 Category.

The event was organised by the North Cyprus Touring and Automobile club (KKTOK) and started in the Kantara area against a backdrop of panoramic views of the north coast below.

A duel soon materialised between Denner and Topçu who LAST year’s K-Pet Super League champions, Lefkoşa-based Yenicami, beat league newcomers Gönyeli 3-1 last Sunday.

Yenicami have now won both games played so far this season, leading one commentator to say the team had “put on an effective performance and disciplined game”.

The match at Lefkoşa Atatürk Stadium saw drama following an owngoal by Gönyeli that resulted from a strike by John Okoli in the 33rd minute to make it 1-0.

The other goals came in the 55th minute from Kenneth Ikechukwu Ngwoke, making it 2-0 and just two minutes later Sabri Selden of Gönyeli netted the ball from a pass by John Okoli, to bring the score to 2-1.

A goal in the fourth minute of extra time by Yenicami’s John Okoli ended the game 3-1.

In another match, Lefke scored a convincing 4-1 win on home turf against Lefkoşa’s Küçük Kaymaklı on Sunday.

Meanwhile, also playing at home, Cihangir lost 4-1 to a “thundering” Merit Alsancak Yeşilova team described by one sports commentator as “Mesaoria Plain sees Yeşilova rainfall!”

There were more “thrashing” scores in other games, with the capital’s Gençlik Gücü beating north coast village team Esentepe, 4-0 — with all goals coming in the last 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Türk Ocağı, who last week beat Doğan Türk Birliği and made a good start to the league, lost 4-2 to Güzelyurt’s Baf Ülkü Yurdu (BÜY) team. BÜY had not gained any points in the first week but managed to scoop three vital ones, to be described by commentators as “Baf Stubbornness”.

One of the highestscoring games, however, was between Girne Halk Evi and İskele’s Gençler Birliği, where the former devastated İskele 5-0.

The first game of the league on Friday last week between Mağusa Türk Gücü (MTG) and Lefkoşa’s Çetinkaya ended in a 1-1 draw.

Yenicami currently leads the K-Pet Super league with six points, MTG is second with four, Gençlik Gücü is third, also with four, and Lefke is fourth with four.

At the bottom of the league, Doğan Türk Birliği and Binatlı are in 15th and 16th places respectively, both with no points.
