CRITICS promise this analysis of a real-life terrorist atrocity will keep you involved. Seen through the eyes of victims, lawmen and perpetrators.
On April 15, 2013, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon killing three and wounding hundreds. After a three-day man hunt, Federal officers cornered two brothers of Chechen extraction Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. A motorist was held hostage and a shoot-out killed the older brother and a policeman. Eventually Dzokhar was sentenced to death for murder and awaits execution.
Mark Wahlberg plays a heroic cop stationed near the point of the explosion, but the movie quickly moves off in various directions. Jimmy O Yang plays a brave Chinese immigrant whose car was commandeered by the killers and Khandi Alexander is an unsparing interrogator. The brothers are played by Alex Wolff and Themo Melikidze.
In 2016, the various strands were deftly interwoven by director Peter Berg who made his name with Battleship about a Navy vessel under attack from aliens.
Time Out called it: “Smart, gripping and unexpectedly sensitive. A thoughtful, character-led drama around a real-life terror attack. Not entirely the rah-rah flag-waving exercise that the title promises.”
