It was one of the first in a series of events for Pink October — Breast Cancer Awareness Month — which saw volunteers begin a ‘Step-A-Thon’ 10,000-steps-a-day challenge. More photos next week.

PINK October kicked off this week with the Step-A-Thon challenge and more fundraising events are to continue throughout the special Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise funds for the Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips).

Some 30 keen “steppers” have begun the challenge to take 10,000 sponsored paces a day, with some even having decided to top that goal.

Additional events aimed at boosting charity funds and awareness of the the importance of early diagnosis and regular health checks for breast cancer began yesterday with a coffee morning during which homemade cakes were served at the Olive Press restaurant and bar in Lapta. Proceeds of 2,460TL are to be split equally between Tulips and MacMillan Cancer Support UK.

Meanwhile women players will step up to the oche on Tuesday for the North Cyprus Ladies Darts League’s second annual Eileen Neville Memorial Competition at Ozanköy’s Club Tropicana. The contest, in memory of an “outstanding” darts player who lost her battle with cancer in 2016, and a raffle on the night will raise funds for the UK’s Myton Hospice, which cared for Mrs Neville.

Donations for the raffle are welcomed, and anyone wishing to register as a player in the singles knockout competition, at 10TL, should do so before 7pm on Tuesday. For more information, call 0533 831 2241 or 0533 839 1274.

Educational seminars are also to be held around the country throughout the month, one of which was staged in İskele on Thursday by Tulips and İskele Municipality, when oncologist Mine Çağlar spoke about cancer and how to prevent it. A full progamme will be published soon.

“Badge days” organised by Tulips were also held in schools on Wednesday and Thursday, at which donations were made towards essentials for breast cancer patients, such as the costs of treatment, wigs, silicon breasts, special bras and other medical needs.

A special October scanning campaign has also been launched in tandem with some hospitals and health centres, to provide checks at discounted prices. Participants include Girne’s Kamiloğlu Hospital, Letam, Gazimağusa Medical Centre, the town’s Yaşam Hospital and Near East Hospital.

MORE than 10,000TL was recently handed over to Tulips at Bollywood restaurant in Çatalköy. The amount included 7,000TL from weekly quizzes organised by George Marshall — who previously presented 4,660TL from the events to the charity — plus further donations including one of 900TL from Terry and Julie Moore.

“We owe huge thanks to George for running these weekly quizzes and Bollywood’s former owner Hussain Azhar as both he and George have personally donated during the year to help increase the amount of money raised,” said a Tulips spokesman. “A truly superb amount of money was raised [and] we cannot thank them all enough.”
