Archbishop undergoes successful operation
ARCHBISHOP Chrysostomos, who has undergone successful surgery in London to remove two small tumours from his liver, is feeling well and is expected to make a stable recovery, it was announced on Wednesday.
The three-hour laparoscopic operation was carried out on Tuesday evening at the London Clinic.
His attending doctors, professors Long Jiao and Paris Tekkis, appeared satisfied with the outcome of the operation.
According to a medical announcement, the archbishop is expected to make a steady recovery within the next seven days.
The archbishop revealed in an interview with Phileleftheros published over the weekend that he had been recently diagnosed with liver cancer.
He said when he found out about it, he was not upset. “I accepted it, I am of a certain age, I am not a child anymore. I was fully prepared. I believe that what I wanted to give, I have, with much love,” the archbishop said, adding he was not afraid of dying.
Death is inevitable, he said, and one must make peace with it.
“If I departed, I would have been satisfied because I have done my duty in full,” he said.
News of the archbishop’s cancer diagnosis has been accompanied by what the archbishop referred to as the “petty” behaviour of those already preparing to succeed him.
