A SURREAL world of gangsters and molls, and grotesque villains in smoky clubs is brilliantly conjured up by this sassy movie. Based on a famous strip cartoon about a lantern-jawed crime-fighter.
Hard-hitting cop Dick Tracy is tersely portrayed by Warren Beatty, who also produced and directed. His efforts won three Oscars in 1990.
In Thirties Chicago, Tracy, in trademark fedora and yellow overcoat, shoots his way past underworld baddies in search of a criminal mastermind who has kidnapped his girlfriend Tess Trueheart, alias Glenne Headley. The other woman in Tracy’s life is sexy chanteuse Breathless Mahoney, alias Madonna who belts out Stephen Sondheim numbers, including Sooner or Later which won the Oscar for Best Song.
Al Pacino is wonderfully over-the-top as mobster Big Boy Caprice. It’s a pop culture feast based on the cartoons of the late Chester Gould, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. Other Oscars were for Art Direction and Make-up.
Critic Roger Ebert said: “One of the most original and visionary fantasies I’ve seen. A masterpiece of studio artificiality that creates a world that never could be. A bizarre loony bin of crime.”
