THE compelling true story of a famous boxer’s descent from a cocky fighting machine to a washed-up fat slob.
An absorbing study of a sports hero whose aggression outside the ring ultimately destroyed him.
This 1980 masterclass by director Martin Scorsese won two Oscars. Critics also voted it the best Hollywood movie of the 1980s.
Robert De Niro won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Jake La Motta, a World Middleweight champion from the Bronx. True to method acting, De Niro over-ate to become a pudgy has-been.
La Motta was a macho guy whose mean streak was his downfall.
His long-suffering wife, finely played by Cathy Moriarty, bore the brunt of his temper at home. Charismatic support from Joe Pesci making his movie debut as Jake’s hard pressed manager.
The fight scenes are technically brilliant and won the Oscar for Editing.
Time Out said: “A masterclass in pain inflicted on oneself and one’s loved ones, as well as one’s opponents. The actual boxing is a compulsive dance of death. De Niro and Scorsese have never been better.”
