‘Goals aplenty’ in K-Pet league

- By KEREM HASAN Chief Reporter

IT WAS another week of goals aplenty in the games of the K-Pet Super League, which saw defending champions Yenicami win their fourth game of the new season, thrashing newcomers Esentepe 3-1 to maintain their winning record and a two-point lead at the head of the table.

The game, played on Sunday at Lefkoşa’s Atatürk Sports stadium, saw the Eagles run away with the tie, with a first goal from Mehmet Altın in the 16th minute and a brace from John Ebuka in the 26th and the first minute of second-half injury time.

Henry Chibueze Odi scored the visitors’ only goal in the 32nd minute from a crossbar rebound.

Third-placed Baf Ülkü Yurdu emerged on the winning end of the same scoreline against another newcomer, Gönyeli, increasing their points to nine in the league and sending their opposition tumbling from fourth spot to seventh.

Meanwhile Mağusa Türk Gücü (MTG), trailing the leaders by just one point in second, went one goal better with a 4-1 comeback against Binatlı to keep up the pressure on Yenicami. The visitors, now second from bottom, had gone 1-0 up from a Mustafa Süzgen free kick in the 39th minute before MTG hit back with a brace from Uğur Kök and goals by Dino Peter and Halil Turan.

The highest-scoring game of the weekend came at Doğan Türk Birliği, where the title hopefuls languishing in 13th place despite a number of foreign signings ran out 5-2 winners over bottom side Gençler Birliği after a match that saw a player from each team sent off.

Elsewhere, Gençlik Gücü won 3-1 at Girne Halk Evi to go fourth in the league, while fifth-placed Cihangir scored all the goals in hosting Türk Ocağı — but two of them as own goals for the visitors.

There were two draws, Lefke entertaining Merit Alsancak Yeşilova to a 3-3 tie under the floodlights last Friday night and Lefkoşa’s Küçük Kaymaklı and Çetinkaya ending 1-1 last Saturday.
