SOUNDS of laughter resounded from the garden of the Black Olive Café in Alsancak, where Kyrenia Amateur Dramatic Society (Kads) put on a sell-out show.
The event, which sold out weeks beforehand, featured three sketches — Shakespeare in 15 Minutes, Codgers Confused in Cyprus and Dinner For One — plus skits from previous Kads & Bounders productions. Quite a few new faces — Steve Crystal, Simon Poole, James Gilroy and Gill Newsome — joined an international cast of well-known Kads actors, Ray Johnson, Stephen Everett, Jan Cottee, Ralph Kratzer, Horst Gutowski, Gabrielle Stopkotte, Gemini Clement, Diana Peek, Susan Turner and Paul and Carol Abel.
Last Thursday’s performance featured a selection of material from Monty Python, Ronnie Barker, Freddie Frinton, Stephen Fry and Pam Ayres. Other bespoke sketches were provided by Phil Lucock, Gemini Clement and Beverley Westbrook. “Rehearsing under the hot sun proved to be quite a labour of love,” said director Beverley Westbrook, adding: “I am also particularly indebted to Pat Muttrie and Peter Clark, who remained cheerful and composed despite shifting sets and props in the hot September sun!
“Ian Chennell joined us in the last week and I thank him for his work.” Guests also enjoyed a buffet on the night, laid out by café owner Vicki Karaca. “Kads are very grateful to Vicki for hosting the event and the Black Olive is a super venue for both a meal and a show like this. The rehearsals and show were filled with fun and laughter and the shouting and screaming from the director was ignored by all!” added Mrs Westbrook. “The cast, crew and committee, including Don and Caroline Attwood, Sarah Garsed and John Davies, would like to extend their warm thanks to all who attended the show and hope to see everyone again at the next one.” Proceeds from the show will be donated to Kyrenia Animal Rescue (KAR) and the SOS Children’s Village at a presentation planned for December, and other performances are in the pipeline. A statement from KAR said: “Congratulations to the performers, the organisers, the venue and most importantly the audience. Our furry paws salute you all.”
