Girl who ‘stabbed woman in street fit to stand trial’
A SCHOOLGIRL who admitted stopping and stabbing a complete stranger seven times in a busy Girne street can be held responsible for her actions, a psychiatrist told Girne District Court on Thursday.
Although fit to stand trial, the 17-year-old — who cannot be named for legal reasons — nevertheless needs “extensive psychological treatment”, said Dr Ayşe Zeki.
In a statement to police, the accused said she did not regret stabbing and seriously injuring Elmerry Sanchez, 49, and that she would carry out similar attacks again if set free, in order to fulfil a childhood dream to kill someone. Ms Sanchez has since recovered from her injuries and was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.
The girl, said to have come to the TRNC from Turkey with her family three years ago, was remanded in custody for one month and will attend psychiatric hospital twice a week.
