A STUDENT was run over at 2.15pm on Thursday while attempting to cross the dual carriageway at a controversial zebra crossing opposite the Cyprus International University between the Hamitköy and Haspolat roundabouts. Traffic experts have long criticised the pedestrian crossing, which is barely visible, as unsuitable and dangerous and have called for an alternative pedestrian bridge or subway.

Police said that Savaş Ürel, 60, was driving in the direction of Gazimağusa without due care and attention when he struck Evrim Atlan, 23, as he was crossing.

Mr Atlan was taken to the Lefkoşa State Hospital and a police investigation has begun.
