THIS outrageous black comedy chronicles the life and death of the Soviet dictator. Played for laughs and the critics loved it.

In 1953, the evil Joseph Stalin, alias Adrian McLoughlin, lies dead on the floor in the Kremlin after a heart attack. A gang of Politbureau grotesques compete to succeed him.

Stalin’s eventual successor Khrushchev, alias Steve Buscemi, is a verbose, nakedly ambitious weasel. Malenkov, played by Jeffrey Tambor, is a preening buffoon. War hero Marshal Zhukov, alias Jason Isaac, is a foul-mouthed incongruity, and Michael Palin is the rather silly conspirator Molotov.

Worst of the lot is secret police chief Beria, alias Simon Russell Beale, who has raped and murdered countless Russians.

This free-wheeling farce was written and directed in 2017 by Armando Iannucci, a Glasgow-born Scot of Italian parents who made his name with BBC Scotland.

Empire magazine gave it their maximum five stars: “Political satire applied to one of the darkest chapters in modern history with sensational results. It has laughs, it’s farcical, frightening and a timely reminder that things could always be worse.”
