Non-reg­is­tered trac­tor col­lides with car, three in­jured

THREE peo­ple were in­jured, two se­ri­ously, in a col­li­sion be­tween a car and a trac­tor which po­lice said was not reg­is­tered for use on the road and had no lights.

The smash hap­pened on the main Girne-Güze­lyurt road near Tepe­başı just af­ter 5pm on Sun­day when car driver Tun­cay Bozkurt pulled out to over­take and ploughed head-on into the un­lit trac­tor com­ing to­wards him.

Mr Bozkurt, 70, and pas­sen­ger Ke­mal Özdemir, 59, had to be cut out of the wreck­age by fire­men and were rushed to Le­fkoşa State Hos­pi­tal. Mr Bozkurt was said to have suf­fered a bro­ken leg and in­ter­nal bleed­ing and Mr Özdemir mul­ti­ple frac­tures.

Trac­tor driver Taner Görür, 21, was treated for mi­nor in­juries at Girne’s Akçiçek Hos­pi­tal.

The crash came at the end of a week in which po­lice said 31 peo­ple were in­jured in 65 road ac­ci­dents, 19 of them in Gaz­i­mağusa, 16 in Le­fkoşa, 17 in Girne, eight in İskele and five in Güze­lyurt.

A to­tal of 6,774 driv­ers were stopped in road­side spot checks and 715 of them re­ported for a range of traf­fic of­fences.
