Denktaş: I will stand again in ’19

FINANCE Minister and Democrat Party (DP) leader Serdar Denktaş has confirmed that he will stand for re-election as head of the party. “I will be running again for the leadership at the ordinary congress which is due in 2019,” he told a meeting of DP members on Sunday.

Mr Denktaş highlighted that the last amount of TRNC funding received from Turkey had been 180 million TL in July, part of which he said had been channelled into “defence expenditure” but no further payments had been received.

“All other payments have been made from the TRNC’s own resources without borrowing a single kuruş,” he said, adding that he and his team had “worked around the clock” to balance the country’s payment liabilities.

He added that economic problems could continue until mid2019, after which he expected further strengthening of the Turkish lira.
