Esentepe notch up second victory
ESENTEPE notched up their second victory of the season to pull three points clear of winless Gençler Birliği at the foot of the K-Pet Super league.
The eastern’s side’s 1-0 home win over Lefkoşa’s Çetinkaya came courtesy of a goal in the 78th minute from Tidiane Sane, who capitalised on an opponent’s misdirected header.
It put them on seven points in 15th spot, level with 14th-placed Girne Halk Evi, who were held to 1-1 draw at home by Lefkoşa’s Küçük Kaymaklı on Sunday. The visitors’ Evor John Bello scored from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute to equalise after Ertaç Taşkıran had put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute.
Sunday saw Gençler Birliği slip further behind in 16th place despite İbrahim Köse putting them on the way to a season’s-first triumph with a goal in the 51st minute against Türk Ocağı — only to see the visitors pull back to level-pegging 13 minutes later.
At the other end of the table, new leaders Mağusa Türk Gücü (MTG) cemented their position with a 1-0 win at Doğan Türk Birliği last Friday night.
Defending champions Yenicami, unbeaten in their first eight games, faltered again on Monday night, letting a 2-0 lead over third-placed Cihangir slip to end in a 2-2 draw. The dropped points let MTG stretch their lead to two points, with a total of 28, while Yenicami have 26 in second, Cihangir 21. Gönyeli rose to fourth, on 19 points, with a 3-1 home win over Binatlı. Elsewhere, Merit Alsancak Yeşilova inflicted the fifth defeat of the season on Lefkoşa’s Gençlik Gücü (GG), beating them 2-0 in the capital. The loss left GG floudering in 12th with just two wins under their belts this season and only three points from the danger zone.
