A POIGNANT elegy about bereavement that won two major Oscars in 2017. If you appreciate serious drama, give this a go.

Casey Affleck is a revelation as embittered handyman Lee Chandler, a solitary figure who unblocks toilets in Boston and gives vent to his inner frustrations in barroom brawls.

The death of his brother brings him back to his hometown, a rain swept fishing village of Manchester by the Sea where he confronts the ruins of his once happy family life.

He stirs the ashes of his former marriage to Randi, a sparky young Miss played by Michelle Williams. He is reminded of his own lost offspring when sorting out his brother’s wayward son Patrick alias Lucas Hedges, a teenager juggling two girlfriends, a rock band and a pissed-off hockey coach.

Writer director Kenneth Lonergan won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and coaxed a bravura performance from Affleck, who was voted Best Actor.

Time Out awarded the maximum five stars: “Affleck joins the rank of giants in a tremendously moving portrait of grief. He burns the screen in this devastating tale of buried trauma.”
