TCs arrested for helping wanted GC

-

TWO Turkish Cypriots have been arrested and a third is being sought on suspicion of helping a Greek Cypriot wanted in the South for attempted murder who was arrested on a luxury complex in Gazimağusa.

Police swooped on a flat in the Gülseren district on Wednesday and detained 40-year-old Iosif Iosif, said to have lived on the site for some time. Two 9mm pistols, 100 live bullets and a “Republic of Cyprus” ID card in the name of Nicholas Nicolao, believed to be forged, were seized.

Gazimağusa District Court heard yesterday that Iosif had been accommodated in an apartment by Cengiz Yakupoğluları, after being picked up from the Akyar border checkpoint by Hüseyin İbrahim last month.

Police officer Ersoy Saydağ said Iosif was accused of possessing an illegal firearm and fake documents, and breaking immigration law.

He was wanted in the South for drug possession and on allegations that he and a foreign national had riddled a car with bullets containing a person, named Nicos Rothotheou, in November. The victim survived.

Iosif was remanded in custody for seven days yesterday and Yakupoğluları and İbrahim for three.
