A RELAXED crime caper about a couple of gentlemen crooks who stole an army payroll from a moving steam train in 1855.

Played for smiles, based on a true story, and the critics applauded. Set in the rolling countryside of Victorian England, our likeable, top-hatted villains are Edward Pierce, played by Sean Connery, and his sidekick Agar, alias Donald Sutherland.

In his younger days Connery did all his own stunts, including a getaway across carriage roofs through billows of sooty smoke.

Pierce’s lady love is the fetching Lesley-Anne Down whose displays of Victorian underwear steamed up some critics’ specs.

One bedroom scene with Connery made 007’s later amorous encounters look more like Sherlock Holmes.

The baddies need imprints of four keys to open the payoll safe and have to trick various worthies.

A randy bank manager is caught with his pants down in a whore house and so forth. Michael Crichton directed in 1978 from his own novel.

Radio Times called it: “A kind of Butch Connery and the Sutherland Kid. Crichton too often lets the comedy run unchecked, but this is a smashing piece of escapism.”
