A THOUGHTFUL human story about a grief-stricken widow’s attempts to rebuild her life after the murder of her husband. This sentimental yarn will keep you involved. In 2007 Halle Berry played a mother of two appealing kids who invites her late husband’s drug-addicted best pal to live over the garage because she feels it is what hubbie would have wanted.
Berry is convincing, but this poignant study in grief and redemption is dominated by Benicio Del Toro, the heroin addict who tries to kick his habit.
He wants to set a good example for his best friend’s children. Heavy stuff, sensitively portrayed. David Duchovny is the murdered man, a saintly property developer — if there is such a thing. He was shot trying to stop a guy beating up a woman and appears in flashbacks.
From a script by Allan Loeb, first time Danish director Susanne Bier creates emotional impact by sudden close ups of hands and eyes.
It’s jumpy, but you get used to it. Time Out said: “Del Toro is magnetic, haunted, restrained and with an added shaving of dry humour.”
