Ledi ‘discount market’ opens its doors to customers
GİRNE’S new-style “discount market”, Ledi — modelled on the likes of Aldi and Lidl — has opened its doors to customers seeking “quality” goods at “cheaper” prices. Economy and Energy Minister Hasan Taçoy performed the official opening of the Çatalköy store last Friday alongside the company’s directors, Rüstem Önkal, Pınar Menteş Önkal and İpek Menteş.
The 800m2 premises next to the Cratos Premium Hotel stocks some 1,500 products and has a staff of 12 people and parking for 80 cars.
Addressing guests at the launch, Mr Taçoy said: “This market has a different concept, as a discount store where many more products will be sold at an affordable price than in usual supermarkets.”
He congratulated the team behind the store for coming up with and “successfully applying” the concept. Ledi human resources manager Erkan Yergin said: “Here we are talking about a concept which means that for a monthly shop, buying dry food and cleaning products in bulk will be much more economical for consumers. Our aim is to keep expenses to a minimum while providing the cheapest shopping experience and we believe it will be a beneficial investment for the public. Instead of buying poorquality products [to save money], we have made this investment for you to be able to buy good-quality products at low prices. We are proud to be a first.”
Mr Yergin said Ledi had an “exclusivity” agreement which meant they could buy products much more cheaply from suppliers, and would also be directly importing goods from Turkey and other countries.
