A LIKEABLE situation comedy about an upper-crust English twit who inadvertently marries into a New York mafia family.

Hugh Grant is perfect as a smoothie but naïve art auctioneer who falls for teacher Jeanne Tripplehorn, unaware this delightful lass is the daughter of local mobster boss James Caan.

Soon our hapless hero is unwisely doing favours for the mob who call him Mickey Blue Eyes. He auctions ghastly paintings by a gangster, such as a portrait of Jesus Christ wielding a machine gun.

It fetches an exorbitant price and the mob have found a new way of money laundering.

Some ingenious plot twists and amusing cameo performances, but the mobsters and their quaint gangster-speak are straight from central casting. Do ya geddit? Burt Young is the thin-lipped mafia don who eventually puts out a contract on Grant after the accidental killing of the mobster artist. The icy cool Caan uses his street-wise know how to extricate his son-inlaw.

Kelly Makin directed in 1999 from a script by Adam Scheinman and Robert Kuhn.

Critic Leslie Halliwell called it: “A fish-out-of-water comedy, ideal for Grant, with his diffident, hesitant Englishman act. Enjoyable while it lasts.”
