Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down The White House

THE most famous whistleblower in history was “Deep Throat”, the source of the Watergate revelations that brought down President Richard Nixon in 1974. His identity was unknown for 30 years. Senior FBI agent Mark Felt whispered secrets to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward in an undergound car park.

Woodward and fellow investigative journalist Carl Bernstein won a Pulitzer Prize.

Felt was protecting the integrity of the FBI whose boss, J Edgar Hoover, died in 1972. Nixon appointed a White House aide, and Felt feared the bureau was now in the President’s pocket.

Felt had been expected to get the top job and may also have been miffed to be passed over. Liam Neeson is compelling as Felt. His contact man was Woodward, a nervy young reporter played by Julian Morris. This movie has none of the glamour of the original saga All the President’s Men when charismatic Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman played the journalists.

This duller but accurate version was written and directed by Peter Landesman in 2017.
