Ethan Hawke is greenhorn cop Jake Hoyt, who partners Alonzo on a training day that will make or break his career — he either graduates as a detective or it’s back into uniform directing traffic.
Jake’s action-packed baptism is full of shocks. A critic found one scene so tense he recommends you watch it through your fingers.
On the meanest streets of LA, the cops are so powerless they break the law themselves to get anywhere. Good support from Tom Berenger, Scott Glenn and Harris Yulin.

A few critics felt that only a somewhat pat-ending marred this otherwise classic thriller.
