Paradise slipping deeper and deeper into the mire

- CR, Karaman

THERE seems to have been no anger about the arrogance of staff at Girne Police Station tearing up foreigners’ bank statements as not being valid in the TRNC when applying for Residency.

We have been TRNC residents for the last 20 years and we do not have a TRNC bank account and do not intend to have one . . . once bitten, twice shy, as they say.

When we came here, our UK bank statement was accepted when applying for Residency but we did at that time also have two TRNC bank accounts with two different banks.

Unfortunately, our money did not stay in them too long as two banks went “rogue” and money was lost.

Like others, when two other banks were rumoured to have problems, we joined the queue and withdrew our money, although, as it turned out, those banks were not “rogue”. So, does this mean that we will be refused permission to renew our Residency despite the fact that we have financially looked after ourselves quite adequately out here, boosting the economy of supermarkets, chemists, pet shops, garden centres, petrol stations, builders, etc, etc, etc? Our money still flows into the TRNC and I have yet to hear of any foreigner receiving financial help from the “host” government if they get into difficulties.

Over the years, there have been one or two incidents where someone has had difficulties but those who have willingly come to their aid have been foreign friends.

So, please can the powersthat-be re-think this new policy . . . paradise seems to be slipping further and further into the mire.

Also , I want to congratulate Mr Petty for his letter of November 16. He said what I was trying to say . . . it is getting to the stage where my husband and I are seriously thinking of retiring from North Cyprus.
