Showstoppers ‘blow away the crowd’
CHRISTMAS shows by the 11strong Showstoppers choir raised 2,800TL for the Royal British Legion (RBL) Kyrenia Poppy Appeal at Alsancak’s Black Olive Café on Friday and
Saturday last week.
Around 130 people attended the Festive Season singalong event, which included 50/50 raffles and songs by the black-clad choir in Santa hats which delighted audiences on both nights.
Director and choir member Ian Chennell accompanied Dawn Büyükertaş for a rendition of Santa Baby and joined Anthony McCartney for a second duet before Angela Jordan wished the audience Happy Christmas Everyone.
Host Vicky Karaca said: “I was blown away! The singers were superb and we all felt that Christmas was really here.
“It was absolutely fantastic and one of the best shows we have ever had!
Said Mr Chennell: “The choir was magnificent, every single one of them, and my thanks to Sue Birchall who was a splendid MC.”
Choir newcomer, teenager Nisan Beyaz, wowed audiences with her version of the Pretenders song 2,000 Miles and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. “I first saw Nisan at Glastonviki,” said Mr
Chennell:
“I just thought ‘Gosh, she can sing’. I invited her to join us
. . . and she did. I hope we don’t lose her to a university abroad next year.”
Other favourite numbers included A Child is Born performed by Anthony McCartney and a cheering version of Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer by Millie Templeton, Frankie Haigh and Jayda Whitewick.
Guests were treated to an appearance by Santa Claus and seasonallydecorated tables with plates of “scrumptious nibbles” including chicken snacks, “pigs in blankets” and cheese and pineapple followed by mince pies.
Vicky Karaca said: “I can’t compliment them enough. It was great to be a part of it and I had loads of very positive telephone calls afterwards.”
