AN ENJOYABLE road movie about a former bouncer driving a black musician on a tour of the racist Deep South. Won three major Oscars this year. Don’t miss it.

This was voted the Best Movie of the Year and a terrific performance by Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor Award. He played real life pianist Don Shirley who faced racist affronts with style and restraint.

Another compelling performance by Viggo Mortensen as his chauffeur and bodyguard. He plays Italian-American Tony Lip, a former nightclub bouncer and a one time racist. The rapport between these characters is palpable.

This is a crowd pleasing movie and a few critics complained this approach somewhat let racism off the hook. Make up your own mind.

Sensitively directed by Peter Farrelly, better known for brasher comedies coproduced with his brother Bobby. The third Oscar was for Best Original Screenplay by Nick Vallelonga, Brian Hayes Currie and Peter Farrelly.

Empire magazine called it: “A supremely likeable film. Its message might seem obvious and its template overcooked, but it boasts a warm heart, with two astoundingly good lead performances to guide it home.”
