CRITICS enthused about this 2000 no holds barred gangster classic. The action hero is private eye John Shaft, alias Samuel L Jackson, who convinces as a black version of Dirty Harry. Relax and enjoy the stylish mayhem.

Shaft leaves a trail of dead bodies as he battles his way through a post-war Mickey Spillane underworld. Sleazy nightclubs, guns, flashy dames, booze, black leather jackets and gold chains, big cars, drug dealers and crooked cops. Got the picture. You’ve seen it all before but it still grabs you.

Shaft was a cop who literally threw his badge at a judge and became a vigilante private eye when a rich white kid, alias Christian Bale, killed a black kid and was allowed to walk free. In the background, a creepy drugs kingpin is menacingly played by Jeffrey Wright.

John Singleton directed from a Screenplay by Richard Price from a story by Shane Salerno.

Back in 1971, a celebrated version of this movie starred Richard Roundtree as John Shaft. In this latest update Roundtree plays Shaft’s uncle.

Critic Roger Ebert called it: “Not just a retread of the old movie, but more interesting and with well observed supporting characters. Jackson makes a commanding Shaft.”
