Bruce Almighty. 5.20pm beIN Movies Family

A SPLENDIDLY irreverent comedy about a schmuck TV reporter who stands in for God with predictably disastrous results. Critics say it’s rubberfaced comedian Jim Carrey’s funniest film and promise you will laugh out loud.

Carrey plays Bruce, an inyour-face news hack who rants off camera against the Almighty for not giving him career breaks. The deity is Morgan Freeman, gravitas with a sense of humour. He tells Bruce “see if you can do better. I’m taking a holiday.”

Bruce transforms his old banger into a Ferrari, gives his girlfriend bigger boobs and gets his dog to use and flush the toilet. He causes chaos by letting everyone win the lottery, and hilariously sabotages his colleagues’ efforts on television. Steve Carell is a hoot as Bruce’s rival.

A few people were offended by the inherent blasphemy. Shouldn’t Bruce have been struck down by a bolt of lightning?

Tom Shadyac directed and the American public voted this their favourite comedy of 2003. It took half a billion dollars at the box-office!

Empire magazine said: “With Carrey on top form and some highly inventive sight gags, it’s the proverbial laugh riot.”
