A BLACK comedy Western packed with slapstick humour and outrageous jokes. Some critics disliked it crudity but others see it as a classic to be compared to Mel Brooks’ raucous Blazing Saddles. Make up your own mind.

In 2014 director, co-writer and star Seth MacFarlane clearly hated the so-called romance of the Old West and gave it a good kicking. As a nerdy sheep farmer, Seth explains the title of his movie — “Everything out here that’s not you wants to kill you.” Characters die from being shot, blown up, snake bitten, gored by a bull, having their throat cut by razor sharp tumbleweed and so on. Sanitary arrangements were primitive and some jokes are consequently lavatorial.

Seth is an ill-fated misfit. He loses girlfriend Amanda Seyfried to the dandified owner of a moustache emporium, played by Neil Patrick Harris. Then he romances Charlize Theron, unaware she is married to killer outlaw Liam Neeson. It’s a hard life, pardner.

Radio Times gave it their maximum five stars: “Take Blazing Saddles, throw in a bucketful of modern expletives and you’ve got a future classic.
