Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
ANOTHER phantasmagorical extravaganza from author JK Rowling creator of Harry Potter’s world of wizards and witches. This is part one of a New Year’s Day double bill treat.
If you are up for it, Rowling’s rollicking 2018 sequel The Crimes of Grindelwald can be viewed later this evening on Movies Premier 2 at 7.35.
In this first fantastical adventure, Newt Scamander, a superbly eccentric Eddie Redmayne, is a collector of magical creatures who travels to 1926 New York to add to the mythical menagerie hidden in his bottomless suitcase. Mayhem ensues when a few beasties escape.
These creatures include the naughty Niffler, a kleptomaniac cross between a platypus and a cuddly penguin that goes around New York nicking things.
In this rarified society, people are divided between wizards and no maj, who are the same as Muggles in the Harry Potter stories. Civil war is in the air and the no maj are led by Percival Graves, alias Colin Farrell, brooding Head of Security of the American Ministry of Magic. Directed by David Yates in 2016. Radio Times called it: “A transporting fable that opens up a whole new universe of dark supernatural adventure. A splendid escapist romp.”
