The two lucky winners of this year’s 10th anniversary Cyprus Today trolley dash competition collected hundreds of liras worth of goods while on their festive ‘grab-all-youcan’ mission
ADRENALINE ran high on Tuesday as two lucky Cyprus Today readers rushed through the aisles of Starling super market in Bellapais after their names were pulled out as winners of the annual Christmas Prize Draw trolley dash.
Celebrating its 10th anniver-sary since being introduced to the TRNC by Cyprus Today, this year again saw the paper joining forces with StarlingSupermarkets to organise trolley dash.
This time, two winners were able to fill their trolleys in 90r’s seconds. Last year's dash, which was a record-breaking festive bonus, saw Pauline Daykin of Alsancak bagging goods worth a whopping 2,269TL in three-minted utes.
Tension mounted as winners Susan Holbrook and Özkul Arif, nervously waited for a timer to signal the start of their sprees. Mrs Holbrook, who wassupported by her ot half Terry, went first to complete the “grab all-you-can” mission and man aged to throw 384TL-worth of items, including frozen food, chicken and honey, into her trolley.
The Ozanköy resident, who had previously won a meal voucher in the Cyprus Today Christmas Prize Draw in 2017, said: “It wasn’t as easy as you might think . . . anything is a bonus really, although I couldn’t get coffee and drinking choco late”, she said, laughing.
“I just started grabbing anything, regardless of what it was . . . I sat last night thinking that aisle has these and this aisle has those, but it all went wrong, I just lost it.”
Lucky winner number two Mr Arif, who is well-known for his charity work as a DJ providing
entertainment for free during fundraisers, said he thought he would try his luck and take part in the draw for the first time. “I was shocked to get the call from Cyprus
Today on Monday to say I was a winner,” he said.
With wife Susan by his side, Mr Arif, from Çatalköy, wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the message “I Can’t Keep Calm I’m On a Trolley Dash” which he had specially made as soon as he was given the good news. He sped around the supermarket, first grabbing a Christmas pudding before racing along the aisles to add goods including haircare products, chocolates, coffee and cheese worth a total of 688TL.
“Whatever we got, we would like to thank you [Cyprus Today and
Starling] for it all,” he said. “It’s the winning and participating that’s important.”
At the end of the dash, store coordinator Serkan Yenier presented the two winners with a festive hamper including chocolate and a bottle of wine while two gift boxes were also handed to the Cyprus Today team. Mr Yenier and his team, said they were “thrilled” to again host the trolley dash. “We are always happy to organise and collaborate on such funfilled activities which also bring a festive spirit to our store with everyone cheering on the winners,” said Mr Yenier. “We hope they were happy with what they managed to put into their shopping trolleys. “We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
