Girne’s open-air market re-opens

GIRNE’S popular Wednesday open air market, or “pazar,” — one of the biggest in the country — reopened for business this week, with a visit from deputy prime minister and foreign minister Kudret Özersay.

Mr Özersay, flanked by other MPs and officials of the Peoples’ Party, bought some items from stallholders and told them to look forward to better times ahead.

He said: “The market is not as crowded as it used to be. However it will get better as time goes. Do not enter into hopelessness as these difficult days will pass,” he said.

Sharing his visit on his social media posting, Mr Özersay said “Steps will be taken to bring activity to the market”, adding: “We must support one another. We will overcome these difficult days.”

Girne’s Wednesday Market is famous for fresh fruit and vegetables and also features clothing, gardening supplies, bric-a-brac and antiques.
