4x4s fear for turtles

- By ANNE CANALP

JOYRIDERS were this week blamed for driving over the first turtle nest discovered this season .. as other 4x4 enthusiasts filmed themselves rallying on another protected beach site.

Volunteers working with the Turtle Project discovered vehicle tracks at Mersinlik Beach, Tatlisu, where they had marked the first nesting spot. They had earlier noted illegal camping, despite signs banning vehicles and camping.

Turtle Project leader, Dr Robin Snape said: “We are deeply distressed as this beach, although small, is a very important nest site and hosts up to 130 nests each season.

“Obstacles to vehicle beach access which were put in place according to the

Natura 2000 management plan, have also been removed by a tractor.”

The 4x4 display of jeeps and other offroaders, known locally as UTVs or Untility Terrain Vehciles, came at Akdeniz Beach, another important nesting site. Both beaches are situated in Areas of Special Environmental Protection.

North Cyprus Off Road Association head Hulus Eren said: “Our association members steer clear of beaches. These guys are individual UTV owners.

“I am calling on all North Cyprus off roaders to stick to dirt roads, leave our turtles in peace and respect the nesting season.”

Kyrenia Off Road Association head, Zühtü Cumalıgil added: “We are not out touring and none of our members would drive on our beaches.”
