Police hunt for drugs suspects
POLICE are on the hunt for three people wanted in connection with a two-kilo drugs bust in Lefkoşa.
Five men – Sheriff Mukhtar Kadı, Sinan Dilim, Mehmet Alkış, Tahir Casun and İbrahim Yağmur – have already been arrested. They were brought before the courts on Tuesday when a judge accepted a request from prosecutors for the suspects to remain in custody for a further six days, to allow police more time to investigate the matter.
At a previous hearing, Lefkoşa District Court was told how packages of cocaine, Bonzai and cannabis were hidden under a tree in Ortaköy, for later collection and sale.
The prosecution said that police received a tip-off that the occupants of a BMW car had placed the drugs under the tree, which was put under surveillance.
Mr Kadı went to the location soon afterwards, at around 11pm on September 11, and was caught “red-handed” as he tried to recover the prohibited substances.
Police discovered that the packages seized contained 20g of cocaine, two kilos of cannabis and 200g of Bonzai.
A car that dropped Kadı off near the tree sped off as police closed in, the court heard.
Security camera footage, however, was said to show that Alkış had been in the BMW whose occupants had dropped the drugs off, with Dilim also being arrested and charged with involvement – then allegedly destroying his mobile phone and refusing to cooperate with police. However investigators told the court they were able to obtain information from Alkış’s phone that revealed he had used it to call Dilim, Casun and Yağmur.
