‘Angel’ cares for dog who had its tongue severed

- By GÜLDEREN ÖZTANSU

A STRAY dog in İskele has been taken into care after its tongue was cut off. Irene Scott of Gönyeli Guardian Angels has taken the dog, named Rhonna, under her wing after learning of its mutilated state online.

Rhonna has started eating solid food such as biscuits, although some of her liquid needs are provide with a syringe, Ms Scott said.

Multiple vets have examined Rhonna and concluded that the terrible injury could only have been caused by cutting.

The fact that the cut was straight indicates it was not from a tin can lid or similar sharp objects that dogs can have accidents

with, she said.

Rhonna (pictured) is receiving antibiotics for an infection in her mouth and has tested positive for ehrlichia.

Ms Scott, who took the dog from İskele Animal Shelter, said she was told that it had attracted attention outside the Petek Patisserie in İskele where “some people were upset” to see it in pain.

“We would just like to raise awareness for the animals here and how many of them suffer,” Ms Scott said. “The laws need to be implemented.”

Berna Özen, a volunteer at the İskele Animal Shelter who was called to tend to Rhonna, said she “couldn’t sleep for two days” after seeing the injury that had been inflicted on the animal.

“It’s a miracle that she is alive but it was impossible for her to survive in the shelter. She is entrusted to Irene [Scott] now and I am following the updates.”

Ms Özen said that the incident had not been reported to the police because “we don’t know where the dog came from”.

“What will the police do?” she said. “It depends on the officer. Some care, some don’t. Most likely they will record [the incident] and send me home.”
