‘Mounds of rubbish are potential health hazard’

- By GÜLDEREN ÖZTANSU

RUBBISH at a residential development in Esentepe is piling up and posing a potential health hazard, a resident has complained.

Cyprus Today reader and Esentepe resident Keith Ellis said that the situation at Palm Homes is “getting serious” because domestic waste has not been collected for over a month.

In a message sent to Esentepe Mayor Cemal Erdoğan and shared with this newspaper he said:

“Can you tell me why the rubbish collection at Palm Homes is now once a month?

“This has been the case since February this year, and your team tells us the car is broken!

“All of the residents have to put their rubbish in a common area, and this is now getting serious with rats and other vermin infesting the area. We pay our taxes and demand an explanation.”

Mr Ellis added that Esentepe Municipality “never return phone calls or give any reasons for this situation”.

Mr Erdoğan told Cyprus Today that the problem will be resolved within a week.

“Two new vehicles worth 70,000TL have been purchased by the EU, which will be handed over to municipalities, including Esentepe Municipality . . . The municipality’s two small 1970’s trucks broke down two weeks ago. Sometimes we borrow vehicles from businessmen.

“We are aware of the situation but it will be sorted out when we obtain the vehicles.

“So it is correct, it is possible that this has happened. The rubbish may be unnoticed if it’s in a secluded corner, it might not be visited but the problem will be solved.”
