Planet of the Apes (1968) ✰✰✰✰ (Channel 5, 12.50pm)

An American astronaut (Charlton Heston) crash-lands on a mysterious planet ruled by intelligent apes. The simian overlords are horrified to discover that, unlike their human slaves, the new arrival can speak, and plan to have him killed. It appears his only hope of survival lies with two kindly chimpanzee scientists. The Planet of the Apes is a sci-fi classic – and head and shoulders above the 2001 Tim Burton remake. The movie is justly famed for its clever twist, but even if you know what’s coming, there’s still plenty to enjoy, including a quotable script, atmospheric score, great performances from a cast that also features Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter, and the still impressive make-up.

Finding Dory (2016) ✰✰✰✰ (BBC1, 3.05pm)

Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) is the next-shell neighbour of Marlin (Albert Brooks) and his young son Nemo (Hayden Rolence) on the Great Barrier Reef. During a field trip to witness the stingray migration, the loveable blue tang experiences a rush of fragmented memories of her parents Charlie (Eugene Levy) and Jenny (Diane Keaton), and the three plucky fish embark on an epic quest to California to reunite the forgetful daughter with her loved ones. Finding Dory is Pixar’s joyous computer-animated sequel to one of its biggest hits, which mines the central character’s onejoke disability for gentle laughs without obviously treading water. DeGeneres’ vocal performance exudes warmth and innocence, compelling us to root for Dory through a couple of the film’s outlandish narrative detours.
