Golden Paws crisis,
THE Golden Paws Association is turning away all new cases of cats and dogs in need of medical treatment due to “financial collapse”.
The animal welfare group says it owes “at least 40,000TL” to five veterinary clinics it works with. The final bill is likely to rise, however, because the treatment of animals currently at a clinic “will not be interrupted” Golden Paws Association vice president Ülkü Cürcioğlu told Cyprus Today.
“In addition we cannot leave creatures on the street, our homes are full. We cannot find temporary homes, so they stay in a pet hotel and the room becomes an extra payment for us.”
Ms Cürcioğlu said the debt has accumulated over the last three months for five animals with leishmaniasis treated with an expensive drug called Milteforan; nine animals that are under treatment for scabies and fungus; three amputations; five operations for loss of an eye; at least 20 cats that received eye treatment; tumour treatment including operations for two animals; internal and external parasite care for dogs that were left in a rubbish tip by Mehmetçik Municipality; and numerous sterilisations.
“We are deeply sad to announce that until the debts are lessened, we need to stop our volunteering work,” a Golden Paws announcement said.
It called for donations to be made to the bank accounts of the veterinary clinics that partner with them by adding “Golden Paws Association” as the payment reference. The clinics and their IBANs are:
