‘Cracking’ walnut festival for Lefke
THE 11th Lefke Walnut Festival, which could not be held last year due to the Covid-19 restrictions, took place on Sunday.
The Lefke Tourism Association and Lefke Municipality teamed up to organise the event, as they have done in the past, which was held at the Lefke Bazaar.
The festival was opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a procession. There was a folk dancing performance and stalls selling local produce, such as walnut jam and other walnutbased delicacies.
Lefke Mayor Aziz Kaya opened the event with a speech emphasising the importance of holding the festival this year. He explained that walnuts, one of the “most important products of Lefke”, have been turned into a product that provides “more economic income with the festival”. Mr Kaya thanked everyone who contributed to the festival.
Lefke Tourism Association president Nermin Şanlıdağ said that the festival, which was organised to “contribute to production”, followed Covid-19 precautions set out by the Communicable Diseases High Committee and the Council of Ministers.
Ms Şanlıdağ provided information about the association’s activities, which she said was established to promote the area. She stated that the festival they organised with Lefke Municipality, which is part of the “Cittaslow” international network, is “very important for the region”.
After the speeches, the Lefke Municipality Folk Dance team performed for festivalgoers. During the festival, Atilla Karaderi’s photography exhibition titled “The Four Seasons of Lefke” was put on display.
